After playing Bluegrass with 3 women  in the band The Cattells for years you would think I would get used to playing with the capo in the 5th fret, but I haven't. They want to play in A,C,B but never in G, (the MAN'S CHORD)  So we changed the name of the band to 'NO G STRING'   Linda Miller,Becky Reed,Ellen Parr, Henry Heckler, Greg Reed, and me. Hope to see everyone at Maury River in June.

The bad news we need to know:

The famous Larry Rice passed away in May - Everyone knows all he did for

bluegrass music, his recordings will always be with us.

------------------

Pete Pike, the legendary bluegrass/country singer died of cancer. He was born in 1929 in Amelia, VA and was still living in his hometown at his death. He recorded bluegrass music with and without Buzz Busby and country music for Four Star Records, Audio Lab (a division of King Records) Starday and Rebel Records among others. He had a high lonesome sound, played guitar and was a song writer. He was back recording after a very long time away from the studio. His recent release was on Copper Creek and was doing his recordings at Flat 5 in Salem, VA. Hopefully his remaining songs will be released as well as a planned reissue of his recordings back in his earlier career. Pete died Saturday, May 27, 2006 at 9:59 AM

Billy Walker was killed along with his wife and two band members including Charlie Lilly, Everett Lilly`s son in a wreck along an Alabama interstate highway south of Montgomery. He was known both as the Traveling Texan and the Masked Singer of country music. He once part of the Hank Thompson Show and his big his were "Cross The Brazos At Waco and 'Charlie Shoes," he was 77. His grandson was also injured and was in critical condition. Walker joined the Opry in 1960.

Legendary southern comedian Fred E. Smith passed away June 4th from liver cancer. He died at his daughter’s home in Maryville, Tennessee surrounded by his family.

Fred was born in Marshall, North Carolina on August 31, 1924 to Ballard and Pearl Smith. He lived a full and exciting life as a comedian and musician working with such greats as Woody Guthrie, Burl Ives, Archie Campbell, Red Rector, Boots Randolph, Grandpa Jones, Kenny Baker, Jimmy Martin and many other top entertainers. He had impeccable timing when it came to his comedy, he was one of the best. He had performed on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry several times, toured the United States with his cousin Red Rector and in the 1940s was part of the famous recording “The Old Chisholm Trail” with Woody Guthrie, Burl Ives, the Coon Creek Girls and others.

Fred was the last of the “old school” southern comedians. He worked the last few years of his career in Pigeon Forge at the Comedy Barn and released a comedy CD in 2005 titled “Tales From A‘way Down Yonder”. He was in rather good health until the last month of his life. Even within days of his death he was still telling jokes to his friends and family in the Fred E. Smith style. Fred is survived by 6 children and thousands of fans.
